How much Zyrtec can I give my dog?
Zyrtec is a brand of cetirizine, an antihistamine. The published dose for dogs is 1 to 2 mg/kg once a day (AAHA 2023 guidelines), or 10 to 20 mg per dog (Merck Veterinary Manual), which is about 0.5 mg per pound. The calculator leads with that lower amount and caps the result at 20 mg per dose, so a big dog is not given a very large amount. Always confirm with your vet first.
| Weight | Dose once a day | 10 mg tablets |

Who should not take it
Talk to your vet before giving cetirizine if your pet:
- has kidney or liver disease (cetirizine is cleared by the kidneys);
- is pregnant or nursing;
- is a cat with kidney disease, which is common in older cats;
- is already on other medicines, until your vet checks for interactions.
From the cetirizine precautions in the Merck Veterinary Manual and Plumb’s Veterinary Drug Handbook.
Overdose signs
Too much plain cetirizine is usually mild, but watch for:
- heavy drowsiness, or the opposite, restlessness;
- drooling or an upset stomach;
- with a Zyrtec-D product, a racing heart, agitation and tremors, which is an emergency.
If you see these, or gave a Zyrtec-D product, call your vet or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 right away.
